Help for families

As a parent or carer, you want the best for your child. Sometimes it is hard to pay for everything your child needs for school, sports, culture or a birthday. Fortunately, there are organisations that can help.

Below you will find an overview of organisations you can turn to for support.

Sam& voor alle kinderen

The central portal for applications

Sam& is a joint initiative of, among others, Leergeld Nederland, Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur, Stichting Jarige Job, the Jeugdeducatiefonds and Nationaal Fonds Kinderhulp. The aim is to help children and young people growing up in families with financial worries so that they can take part in activities that their peers take for granted — from school supplies and sports to culture and birthdays.

Parents or professionals can submit an application for various forms of support through a digital portal.

Target group: Children and young people (aged 0–21) from families with financial worries.

Individual organisations

In addition to the central Sam& portal, you can also approach the organisations below directly.

Stichting Leergeld

Leergeld helps children from families with limited financial means to get the same opportunities as their peers. Think of help with school supplies, a laptop, a bike, swimming lessons, sports or music lessons, and sometimes birthday materials or other activities. This is done through local Leergeld foundations spread across the Netherlands.

Target group: Children aged roughly 4 to 18 from families with financial worries.

Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur

This fund ensures that children and young people from families with little money can still take part in sports or creative activities. It pays the membership fees or tuition for sports clubs or cultural activities such as football, dance, music lessons or gymnastics. Sometimes items such as sportswear are also covered.

Target group: Children and young people from families with limited financial means who want to take part in sports or culture.

Stichting Jarige Job

Jarige Job ensures that children whose families cannot afford to celebrate their birthday can still have a party. This is done through a birthday box with decorations, a treat and a gift element so that the birthday can be celebrated at school or at home.

Target group: Children (usually up to 18) in the Netherlands whose families have no budget to celebrate a birthday.

Nationaal Fonds Kinderhulp

Kinderhulp supports children and young people with things that cannot always be arranged through other funds — for example a bike, warm clothing, a day out, study- or school-related costs, or other individual needs. Kinderhulp often works through professionals from the social sector to help children who would otherwise fall through the cracks.

Target group: Children and young people (aged 0–21) living in poverty who need extra help with various basic and developmental needs.
